Violence and restrictions cast shadow over Nigeria's 2027 election preparations

Nigeria’s path toward the 2027 general election is increasingly marked by incidents of political violence and systemic restrictions on opposition activities. Recent events in the southeastern states of Enugu and Ebonyi have highlighted a growing climate of hostility that threatens the fundamental safety of political participants. These developments include the fatal shooting of a supporter of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Enugu State and the killing of supporters of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ebonyi State. Additionally, there have been reported attacks on party offices and significant limitations placed on opposition parties regarding their access to public facilities for campaign purposes. These combined factors have prompted urgent questions among analysts and citizens about whether the upcoming election will be conducted in an environment of fair competition or one dominated by fear and exclusion.

Background

The most prominent recent incident involved Ifeanyi Nwolie, an NDC supporter who was reportedly shot during political activity in Afa, a community within Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State, on October 10, 2026. Nwolie was later buried in his hometown. Following the funeral, NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi, who traveled from the United Kingdom via Abuja to attend, visited Nwolie’s mother. Obi offered to provide the monthly financial support her son had previously sent her, covering the period until December 2027. While this gesture addressed the immediate financial loss for the family, it did not resolve the broader issue of physical safety for political activists.

Simultaneously, violence erupted in Ebonyi State during an attack on the convoy of Rollins Offia Nwali, the NDC candidate for the Ebonyi State House of Assembly in the Ezza South Constituency. Security details assigned to protect Nwali engaged with suspected political thugs associated with the ruling APC, who were reportedly armed with AK-47 rifles and pump-action guns. According to security sources, the operatives returned fire, resulting in the death of one attacker at the scene and a second who died in hospital. In parallel, the NDC secretariat in Benin City, Edo State, was subjected to an attack. Furthermore, inflammatory rhetoric was attributed to Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, the former Deputy President of the Senate, during a rally in Warri, Delta State. Reports also indicate that opposition parties in various states are being prevented from utilizing public spaces and facilities for their campaign activities, while concerns about potential violence have emerged in parts of northern Nigeria.

Why it matters

These incidents raise fundamental concerns about the nature of political participation in Nigeria as the 2027 election approaches. The threat to democracy is not limited to physical violence; it extends to the narrowing of democratic space through intimidation and unequal access to resources. When supporters face the risk of death for their political affiliations and opposition parties are barred from public venues, the ability of the electorate to make free and informed choices is compromised. Experts argue that a healthy democracy requires political opponents to compete through ideas, policies, and persuasion rather than through fear or exclusion. The current environment suggests that citizens may be navigating a landscape where exercising their democratic rights comes with significant personal risk, potentially undermining the integrity of the electoral process before voting even begins.
