Ukraine Restores Satellite Speeds

On Saturday 24 October, Ukrainian officials announced that the Starlink satellite system and its military counterpart Starshield had returned to full operating speeds. According to a post by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on X, current speeds have reached the necessary threshold for supporting frontline logistics and countering Russian jet-powered Shahed drones. Officials from the Ukrainian defence ministry verified that the link maintained stability while exceeding 400 kilometres per hour. This update followed a period of over one week during which speeds were limited to 160 kph, a restriction that hindered the military’s capacity to shoot down Russian strike drones and led to the suspension of specific missions.

Background

Starlink, operated by SpaceX, provides satellite‑based broadband, while Starshield is its military‑grade version. In late October, the United States imposed restrictions on the services, limiting their speed and bandwidth. The move was intended to curb Ukraine’s capacity to use the technology for military purposes, but it had the opposite effect, hampering Ukrainian forces’ communications and drone‑interception capabilities. The restrictions sparked tensions between Kyiv and Washington. Ukrainian officials argued that the slowdown compromised frontline operations, while U.S. officials maintained that the limits were necessary for compliance with export controls.

Why It Matters

The restoration of full speeds is significant for Ukraine’s war effort. With speeds back above 400 kph, the Ukrainian military can more effectively coordinate logistics, transmit real‑time battlefield data, and deploy counter‑measures against Russian Shahed drones. The previous cap had forced the cancellation of some defensive actions and limited the army’s ability to respond to air attacks. President Zelenskyy highlighted that the restored speeds “really matter” for defending Ukraine against the drones, underscoring the operational impact of the slowdown.

What Happens Next

The U.S. Efforts to conclude the conflict have grown more intense, as Russia has consented to restart trilateral talks with Washington and Kyiv in the coming month. Earlier on Friday, Kyiv and Moscow reached an accord on a limited truce mediated by first lady Melania Trump in the vicinity of Oleshky within Kherson. While the restoration of satellite speeds is a tactical improvement, the broader diplomatic context remains unresolved.

The Ukrainian Foreign Policy Committee, chaired by MP Oleksander Merezhko, has called for further actions to ensure sustained access to satellite services. No additional steps have been announced by the U.S. or Ukraine regarding future restrictions.
