Background The conflict that began in February 2022 has seen extensive use of unmanned systems by both sides. By October 2026, Ukrainian forces were experimenting with new applications for drones beyond combat, including medical evacuation. Reports from CBS News, Euronews, the BBC and France 24 note that a soldier from the 30th Separate Brigade, identified as Konstantyn Vlasenko, had been stranded in a heavily mined area for almost 500 days after being wounded by a Russian drone.

The rescue operation The 92nd Separate Assault Brigade announced that a heavy‑lift hexacopter, developed by Gurzuf Defence, was modified to carry a person. Originally designed as an attack platform, the drone was re‑engineered with a medical module and a winch system to prevent swinging or flipping during flight. Preparations involved four Ukrainian brigades and took seven days, while the actual lift lasted about an hour and fifteen minutes and covered roughly 40 miles. Other drones were deployed to distract Russian forces during the mission.

According to the brigade’s statements, the drone descended to the ground, the soldier attached himself to the winch, and the aircraft lifted him to a safer location where comrades awaited to transfer him to a hospital. The operation was filmed and later verified by the BBC’s fact‑checking service, which found no evidence of manipulation. Gurzuf Defence co‑founder Pavlo Feldbloom told CBS that the company had not set out to create a dedicated evacuation platform, but the payload capacity of the hexacopter made such a rescue possible. He cautioned that aerial evacuation would remain a last‑resort option due to the high risks involved.

Significance The mission is described by the 92nd Brigade as a "world‑first" and represents a notable development in battlefield medical logistics. While Ukraine has previously used unmanned ground vehicles for casualty extraction, this is the first reported instance of an aerial drone performing the task. Analysts cited by France 24 suggest that the success could influence future rescue strategies, although the same sources stress that the technique is unlikely to become routine.

The rescued soldier is reported to be receiving treatment and rehabilitation, and his life is no longer in immediate danger. The operation underscores the evolving role of drones in the Ukraine‑Russia war and highlights how technological adaptation can address challenges posed by dense minefields and hostile airspace.
