Attack on Uratta Police Station On the morning of Saturday 17 October 2026, unidentified gunmen stormed the Uratta Police Station in Aba South Local Government Area of Abia State. The assault, which began at approximately 02:00 GMT, involved the arson of sections of the building and the burning of several vehicles, including a police Hilux van, a Toyota, and a police‑service van. A power generator and other equipment were also reported destroyed.
Casualties and medical response State Commissioner of Police Wilfred Afolabi confirmed that two police officers died as a result of the attack. Three additional people – two fellow officers and a civilian – sustained injuries and were taken to the Abia State University Teaching Hospital for treatment. One of the deceased officers was reportedly burnt beyond recognition. The commissioner, accompanied by Governor Alex Otti, inspected the damage at the station shortly after the incident.
Police response and investigation Commissioner Afolabi stated that no arrests had yet been made but assured the public that investigations were underway to identify and apprehend those responsible. He indicated that the police were actively pursuing leads and urged residents to cooperate with the inquiry. The governor pledged to cover the medical expenses of the injured officers and thanked the police for their swift response.
Motive and additional details An anonymous source familiar with the incident suggested that the attackers may have been attempting to raid the station’s armoury, which was found empty at the time of the assault. The same source claimed that some police uniforms were taken and that one of the assailants was shot dead but later removed from the scene by accomplices. These details have not been independently verified by the police.
Context of recent security incidents The Aba attack follows a series of violent incidents targeting security personnel across Nigeria. Five months earlier, seventeen officers were killed in a coordinated assault on the Nigerian Army Special Forces School in Buni Yadi, Yobe State. In the preceding month, a police officer was among five fatalities in separate attacks in Plateau State, despite a curfew. Additionally, a police officer was killed in November 2024 during a gun attack on a patrol team on Asaga Road in Ohafia, Abia State.
Outlook Authorities have pledged to bring the perpetrators to justice and have called for heightened vigilance among police personnel. The incident underscores ongoing challenges to law‑and‑order efforts in the region, prompting calls for increased security measures at police facilities.
