Announcement of Exploration President Donald Trump used his Truth Social platform on 14 October 2026 to state that a substantial oil, gas and mineral exploration effort is preparing to commence in Greenland. He described the island as "new and beautiful" and suggested that the quantity of easily recoverable oil there could exceed that found on most other lands worldwide. No specific details about the companies involved or the scope of the projects were provided.

Recent Security Agreement The exploration announcement follows a security accord signed the previous month between the United States, Denmark and Greenland. The agreement, reported by both France 24 and CBS News, is intended to reduce tensions that arose after Trump previously threatened to take control of the strategically located territory. It grants the United States broad access to Greenlandic airspace and land for defence purposes, while reaffirming Danish sovereignty and Greenlanders' right to self‑determination. The pact is still awaiting a second reading in Greenland's parliament before a final vote.

Expanded Military Presence Under the terms of the deal, the United States may enlarge the existing Pituffik Space Base, which functions as an early‑warning missile detection site. In addition, the agreement permits the establishment of new bases at Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig, sites that are roughly 950 miles apart. Any of the three parties can propose additional defence zones, subject to mutual approval, and the pact bars non‑NATO nations from setting up bases on the island without consent.

Expert Views on Resources Industry analysts cited by CBS News note that Greenland’s mineral deposits have been only lightly explored and that extraction costs have historically limited commercial interest. While some experts believe the island holds significant untapped oil reserves, they also point out that economic viability remains uncertain without substantial investment and infrastructure.

Political Context Trump has repeatedly highlighted Greenland’s strategic importance for U.S. defence in Europe, claiming that any future attack on the United States would have to traverse the island and that American forces could intercept a wide range of threats there. Since his first term, he has floated ideas ranging from purchasing the territory to using military force to secure greater control. The current statements and the security agreement represent the latest development in this ongoing focus on Greenland’s geopolitical and resource potential.
