Soldier’s Bribe Refusal and Reward

On 4 November 2026, the Nigerian Army announced that Private Utim Terwase had been awarded a cash sum of ₦500,000 for refusing a bribe from a suspected kidnapper in Plateau State. According to reports, the suspect had attempted to escape after being apprehended, offering the soldier the same amount in exchange for his release. Private Terwase declined the offer and handed the suspect over to the appropriate authorities. Major General Maxwell Dangana, who serves as the General Officer Commanding of the 3rd Division and leads Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP), acted as the representative for the award's handover. The ceremony was conducted by Colonel Philimon Malgwi, Commander of Sector 6, OPEP. While handing over the prize, Major General Dangana commended the serviceman’s actions, stating they demonstrated peak military expertise, fidelity, and dedication to their role.

Background

Operation Enduring Peace is a security initiative operating in the North‑Central region of Nigeria, including Plateau State. The Nigerian Army has been actively engaged in counter‑kidnapping and anti‑crime operations in the area. In 2023, the Anambra State Police Command awarded a female officer, Inspector Charity Oyor, ₦250,000 for rejecting a bribe from a suspected cable thief. The Army’s reward for Private Terwase mirrors this earlier example of recognising integrity among security personnel.

Why It Matters

The incident highlights the ongoing threat of kidnapping and extortion in Plateau State and the importance of maintaining ethical conduct among military personnel. By refusing the bribe, Private Terwase upheld his duty and demonstrated accountability, honesty and self‑less service. Major General Dangana stated that the soldier’s action should inspire other officers and soldiers to emulate his exemplary conduct. The reward, matching the amount offered as a bribe, serves as a tangible incentive for integrity within the Army.

What Happens Next

The Army’s announcement did not specify further actions beyond the presentation of the reward. Nevertheless, the General Officer Commanding called on every member of Operation Enduring Peace to emulate Private Terwase, noting that such honors are integral to wider initiatives aimed at fostering responsibility, moral conduct, and professional standards within the operation’s mandated duties.

The incident reinforces the Army’s commitment to combating kidnapping and extortion in the region and underscores the importance of integrity in security operations.
