What happened
On 26 October 2026, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced that several opposition parties had met its October 24 deadline to correct the names of candidates omitted from its published electoral list. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) confirmed that it had completed the required corrections, according to National Organising Secretary Captain Umar Bature, retired. The People's Democratic Party left out several applicants, specifically Oladipupo Adebutu for the Ogun governorship and Prof Isa Pantanmi for Gombe, along with seven candidates for the House of Assembly.
The Social Democratic Party, Nigeria Democratic Congress, African Democratic Congress, Action Democratic Party, and Labour Party likewise stated that they had filed the required corrections prior to the cutoff. NDC’s National Publicity Secretary confirmed the submission, while ADP’s National Chairman Engr. Yabagi Yusuf Sani and LP’s National Publicity Secretary Ken Asogwa stated that their parties were in good standing with INEC.
Despite these submissions, INEC has not yet released the updated list or confirmed the status of certain omitted candidates, notably NDC’s John Upan and ADC’s Ambassador Nkoyo Toyo in Cross River State.
Background
INEC’s published electoral list for the forthcoming general elections omitted several candidates from major opposition parties. The commission gave the affected parties a deadline of 24 October to submit corrections. The PDP’s omissions included two governorship candidates and several House of Assembly aspirants. Similar omissions affected the SDP, NDC, ADC, ADP and LP.
The PDP’s National Organising Secretary, Captain Umar Bature, retired, confirmed that the party had complied with the deadline. The NDC’s National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, and the ADP’s National Chairman, Engr. Yabagi Yusuf Sani, also confirmed compliance. LP’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Asogwa, emphasised that the party was confident of a successful outing in the upcoming elections.
Why it matters
The corrections are crucial for the legitimacy of the upcoming general elections. Omitted candidates may be barred from contesting if their names remain absent from the official list. The fact that several opposition parties have complied with INEC’s deadline indicates a concerted effort to ensure all candidates are represented. However, the lack of confirmation from INEC on the status of certain candidates, such as NDC’s John Upan and ADC’s Ambassador Nkoyo Toyo, leaves uncertainty for those individuals and their parties.
INEC’s handling of the matter is closely watched by political observers, as any delay or failure to update the list could affect the electoral prospects of the parties involved. The parties’ statements that they are in good standing with INEC suggest that they expect the commission to finalize the corrections promptly.
What happens next
The commission has not yet released an updated list of candidates. According to a spokesperson for INEC’s voter education in Cross River, the matter is being handled from Abuja and is a legal issue; the final outcome is expected to be announced on Monday, 30 October. Until INEC publishes the revised list, the status of the omitted candidates remains uncertain.
The parties involved have expressed confidence that the corrections will be reflected in the final electoral roll, but they are awaiting official confirmation from the commission.
