The Federal Government of Nigeria announced on 25 October 2026 that it has transferred N38.93 billion to 166 public tertiary institutions across the country. Targeting 79 universities, 46 polytechnics, and 41 colleges of education, this distribution is funded through the Needs Assessment Revitalisation Fund. During a briefing in Abuja, Mrs Efe Ovuakporie, who serves as the Head of Media at the Federal Ministry of Finance, revealed the details of the payment.
According to the Ministry, the largest share of the fund – N28.A sum of 5 billion was set aside for the 79 universities, whereas the polytechnics were granted N5.The polytechnics received 8 billion, and the colleges of education were given N4.The allocation for the colleges of education totaled 7 billion. The money is intended for approved projects that address critical infrastructure deficits and improve teaching and learning facilities.
Background
The Needs Assessment Revitalisation Fund was created to respond to longstanding concerns about the deteriorating state of public tertiary infrastructure in Nigeria. Earlier reports highlighted severe shortages in laboratory equipment, classroom space and campus utilities, prompting calls for targeted investment. The current disbursement follows a broader federal strategy that, as reported in July 2026, has seen more than N1 trillion invested in tertiary education over two years, focusing on infrastructure, institutional capacity and access.
This financial support is also consistent with the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). The MoU outlines agreed measures to improve university conditions, and the present allocation is described as part of the government’s effort to implement those measures.
Why it matters
The allocation directly impacts students, academic staff and the wider community that rely on public tertiary institutions. By addressing infrastructure gaps, the government aims to enhance the quality of education, support research activities and improve overall learning environments. The Ministry emphasised that effective coordination among relevant agencies and beneficiary institutions is essential to translate the funds into tangible improvements.
Stakeholders, including university administrators and student bodies, have welcomed the injection of resources, noting that previous funding shortfalls have hindered project completion. The Ministry also advised the public to consult the Federal Ministry of Finance website for detailed information on individual institutions and their specific allocations.
What happens next
Beneficiary institutions are expected to commence or advance approved projects that target identified infrastructure needs. The Ministry highlighted the importance of channeling the approved funding strictly towards the intended projects to build institutional capacity and improve educational outcomes. No specific timelines for project completion were provided, but the statement indicated that ongoing monitoring and coordination will be undertaken to ensure effective use of the funds.
