Market overview On 21 October 2026 the Nigerian Exchange Limited recorded a modest rebound after a session of losses the previous day. The All‑Share Index increased by 0.26 per cent, closing at 245,911.13 points, while the total market capitalisation of listed equities rose by roughly N411 billion to N159.67 trillion, according to both ThisDay and Punch.

Drivers of the rally Analysts attributed the uplift to renewed buying pressure on a mix of industrial, consumer‑goods and select banking stocks. HBM Nigeria Plc was highlighted as a focal point of investor interest, alongside 26 other companies that together contributed to the capital‑isation gain. Large and medium‑cap stocks such as NASCON Allied Industries, Unilever Nigeria, Custodian Investment and ABC Transport also posted notable price appreciation.

Top performers and laggards Among individual equities, Austin Laz & Company recorded the strongest rise, climbing almost 10 per cent to N3.53 per share. ABC Transport and Cutix followed closely with gains of 9.92 per cent and 9.91 per cent respectively, while Thomas Wyatt Nigeria and Caverton Offshore Support Group each advanced around 9.8 per cent. In contrast, Livestock Feeds led the decline list, falling 9.76 per cent to N17.10 per share. Other losers included Guinea Insurance, NPF Microfinance Bank, Mutual Benefits Assurance and AIICO Insurance, each slipping between 3 per cent and 8 per cent.

Trading activity Overall trading volume dipped marginally, falling 0.19 per cent to 348.751 million shares valued at N25.877 billion across 32,639 transactions. United Bank for Africa generated the highest turnover, with 48.141 million shares worth N2.118 billion. FCMB Group, Zenith Bank, Guaranty Trust Holding Company and Dangote Sugar Refinery also featured among the most actively traded stocks.

Sector performance and monetary backdrop Sector indices reflected broad participation. The Industrial Index rose to 10,258.95 points and the Consumer Goods Index to 4,042.08 points. The Premium Index added 168.89 points, while the NGX 30 Index edged higher to 9,043.59 points. Banking and insurance indices showed modest declines, closing at 2,493.34 and 1,068.32 points respectively. The trading environment was underpinned by a stable Monetary Policy Rate of 23 per cent maintained by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Outlook Market sentiment turned bullish, with 27 advancing stocks outnumbering 21 decliners. Analysts described the session as characterised by cautious optimism and mixed trading patterns. Cowry Assets Management suggested that continued bargain‑hunting could sustain further gains, though intermittent profit‑taking might temper upside momentum.

Conclusion The day's rebound demonstrates that investor confidence in Nigeria’s equity market remains resilient, especially in sectors linked to industrial production and consumer demand. Continued stability in monetary policy and diversified buying interest are likely to influence the market’s trajectory in the coming weeks.
