A 43‑year‑old Nigerian citizen, Akinade Adedeji Raheem, was extradited from Benin to the United States in late October 2026. Upon his arrival, a federal judge in the Northern District of Georgia processed his case on multiple fraud charges and ordered his detention by the US Marshals Service until the next legal steps. According to the prosecution, Raheem and his accomplices submitted over 300 deceptive tax forms from 2018 through 2023, attempting to obtain more than $100 million in reimbursements from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
US Attorney Theodore S. Hertzberg characterized the criminal activity as a massive identity theft ring that exploited the private information of US taxpayers and tax specialists. The indictment alleges that the suspects created online IRS accounts, filed false returns and directed the refunds to prepaid debit cards linked to addresses they controlled. It is claimed that the illicit funds were cleaned by using money orders that stayed under mandatory reporting limits, then spent on used vehicles bought through online auctions, many of which were sent to Nigeria, along with luxury apparel and other items.
Background
This matter originates from a grand jury indictment filed on 24 February 2026, which accused Raheem of conspiring to commit wire and mail fraud, conspiring to launder money, 14 instances of access-device fraud, and 14 instances of aggravated identity theft. The legal document also identified Abayomi Quadri Eletu, who lives in both the United Kingdom and Nigeria, as a suspected partner in the crime; Eletu was detained in the UK and is currently undergoing extradition procedures. According to court documents, the scheme relied on hundreds of stolen identities, including Social Security numbers, to fabricate tax returns that siphoned money from the US Treasury.
Special Agent in Charge Christopher J. Altemus Jr. from the IRS Criminal Investigation Texas Field Office stated that the suspected fraud harmed hundreds of taxpayers and drained resources from initiatives intended for the general population. Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration Special Agent-in-Charge Anthony Colello pointed to this matter as proof of the dedication of investigators and prosecutors to fighting major financial offenses.
Why it matters
The alleged fraud affected hundreds of American taxpayers and resulted in a loss of more than $100 million to the IRS, directly reducing funds available for federal programmes. If convicted, Raheem faces up to 20 years in prison for each wire‑ and mail‑fraud conspiracy count, up to 20 years for the money‑laundering conspiracy, and a mandatory two‑year sentence for aggravated identity theft, in addition to potential sentences for each access‑device fraud count. The case underscores the transnational nature of modern financial crime, involving coordination between US law‑enforcement agencies, Beninese authorities who facilitated the extradition, and partners in the United Kingdom.
What happens next
Raheem remains detained by the US Marshals Service while the court schedules further hearings. The indictment indicates that the prosecution will seek to recover the stolen funds and pursue additional charges if further evidence emerges. Parallel proceedings continue for Abayomi Quadri Eletu in the United Kingdom, where extradition to the United States is still pending. The Department of Justice has indicated that the case will proceed through the federal court system in Georgia, with sentencing to be determined upon any eventual conviction.
