Mubarak Abdullahi, who is also known by the alias Sardaunan Samari, has been arraigned in connection with the circulation of a fraudulent document. The paper allegedly originated from Nigerian head of state Bola Ahmed Tinubu and was directed toward the American commander-in-chief. Agents from the Department of State Services (DSS) presented Abdullahi to a judicial body in Kaduna state, which subsequently mandated his detention.
Bayo Onanuga, serving as the Presidential Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, disclosed in a public release that Abdullahi was apprehended on 28 September after distributing the fraudulent document via his social media profile. The post included the caption “ATIKU IS COMING.” Onanuga stated that Abdullahi admitted to investigators that he had shared the document and offered an apology for his actions. However, the agency noted that this admission and apology were insufficient to drop the case. The DSS filed a three-count charge against him at the Federal High Court in Kaduna, with the charges bordering on cybercrime and defamation. Abdullahi was arraigned before Chief Magistrate Court No. The ruling, issued at 10 in Kabala Doki, Kaduna, mandated his incarceration at the Nigerian Correctional Centre in Kaduna. Onanuga indicated that the date for Abdullahi’s formal arraignment has yet to be fixed.
Background
The incident involves a document that was widely circulated online, falsely attributed to President Tinubu. Bayo Onanuga, in his official communication, described Abdullahi as an avowed supporter of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. The DSS stated that it possesses the capacity to trace individuals engaged in circulating misleading information in cyberspace. The agency emphasized that it would continue to pursue such cases to maintain order in the digital space. The arrest and subsequent arraignment took place in Kaduna, a state with significant political history in Nigeria. The charges filed against Abdullahi include counts related to cybercrime and defamation, reflecting the legal framework used to address the spread of fake news and documents in the country. The case highlights the ongoing efforts by security agencies to monitor and regulate online content that is deemed misleading or defamatory.
Why it matters
The case has drawn significant attention from human rights activists and political observers. Omoyele Sowore, a human rights activist, publicly lamented the arrest of Abdullahi. In a post on his X handle, Sowore criticized the government and the APC, referring to the regime as “#officialABAT.” He questioned the use of national security agencies to suppress dissenting voices, describing the arrest of a citizen for posting a document online as shameful. Sowore warned that a day of reckoning was coming for those in power. The reaction underscores the tension between government efforts to combat misinformation and concerns over the freedom of expression and the use of state agencies for political purposes. The case also highlights the broader issue of fake news and document forgery in the digital age, which poses challenges for both law enforcement and the public. The involvement of high-profile political figures, such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, adds a layer of political sensitivity to the case. However, as of the time of reporting, neither Atiku Abubakar nor his media aide, Phrank Shaibu, had reacted to the developments. Punch Online stated that it was unable to confirm independently the claim that Abdullahi supports the former Vice President.
What happens next
The next step in the legal process is the fixing of a date for Abdullahi’s formal arraignment at the Federal High Court in Kaduna. Until then, he will remain in remand at the Nigerian Correctional Centre. The DSS has indicated that it will continue to monitor and act against those who circulate misleading information online. The outcome of the trial will likely have implications for how similar cases are handled in the future, particularly regarding the balance between combating fake news and protecting individual rights.
