Nigeria’s opposition may name 2027 presidential candidate days before polling day
Salihu Lukman, convener of the G100 pressure group, said opposition parties could announce a single presidential candidate for the 2027 election just days before the poll, after a series of alliance talks that have expanded beyond six parties and are facing trust challenges.

Background of the G100 The G100 political pressure group was created to encourage a united opposition front after an all‑opposition summit in Ibadan in April 2026, which resolved to field a consensus candidate against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Salihu Lukman, the group’s convener and a former national vice‑chairman of the APC, has been at the centre of the alliance’s progress.
Alliance Expansion Initially involving six parties, the G100 has now reached out to additional political organisations. Lukman said the alliance is moving beyond early‑stage discussions and is actively engaging more parties to broaden the coalition.
Trust Issues and Working Groups A key obstacle identified by Lukman is the trust deficit among opposition parties and their candidates. To address this, a summit held on 31 August agreed to form five working groups. One of these groups will focus on developing a single consensus presidential candidate, while the others will work on a minimum programme of action for all participating candidates.
Decision‑Making Process Each party will nominate members to the consensus‑candidate working group, either through its candidate or the party itself, under agreed terms of reference. Lukman noted that the parties and their candidates have taken the lead in the process, moving the decision‑making from the G100 to the parties themselves.
Timing of the Announcement According to Lukman, the opposition alliance is progressing steadily and could announce the consensus candidate as late as a few days before the 2027 general election. He said the timing could range from two months, a few weeks, or even just days before polling day, depending on how quickly the parties can reach agreement.
Broader Coalition Scope The negotiations are not limited to the presidential ticket. Lukman added that the alliance will also cover candidates for Senate, House of Representatives, governorship, and state House of Assembly seats, making the coalition’s scope wider than a single ticket.
Current Status While the G100 has played a pivotal role in initiating the alliance, Lukman emphasised that the parties are now driving the engagement directly. The group’s efforts have expanded beyond the initial six parties, and the alliance is working to build confidence among its members.
Outlook The opposition’s ability to present a unified front will depend on overcoming trust challenges and finalising a consensus candidate in time for the 2027 election. The G100’s role remains to facilitate dialogue, but the parties themselves are now steering the process.
