The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) announced on 25 October 2026 that it has identified 53 individuals who have been in contact with a confirmed Ebola patient. The contacts include healthcare workers, domestic staff, the patient’s spouse and personnel involved in sample collection. NCDC Director‑General Dr Jide Idris ordered all hospitals across the country to isolate any suspected Ebola cases without awaiting laboratory confirmation, emphasising the need for rapid infection‑prevention measures.

The confirmed case involves a 42‑year‑old woman who returned to Nigeria from Uganda via Addis Ababa on 3 October. She was diagnosed with Ebola disease caused by the Bundibugyo virus in the Federal Capital Territory on 20 October. According to the NCDC’s Ebola Disease Situation Report dated 24 October, the patient showed significant improvement while in isolation.

Background

The outbreak was officially declared in the Democratic Republic of Congo on 15 May 2026 and has since spread rapidly, with the Africa Centres for Disease Control reporting at least 600 deaths across the region. In response, international medical charities such as Médecins Sans Frontières have conducted training simulations in Kenya to strengthen regional emergency capacity. Within Nigeria, the detection of the case underscores the surveillance systems that NCDC has been developing over recent years, according to Dr Idris.

Contact tracing has been a priority since the outbreak began. The 53 contacts have been categorised and are being monitored, with follow‑up continuing for 21 days after each person’s last possible exposure. The NCDC highlighted that protecting healthcare workers is essential for safeguarding the wider community, noting that delayed recognition of suspected cases can increase transmission risk.

Why it matters

The identification of contacts and the directive to isolate suspects aim to prevent further spread of Ebola within Nigeria, a country with a large and densely populated urban centre in the Federal Capital Territory. Healthcare workers are particularly vulnerable; the NCDC stressed that prompt isolation and protective measures are crucial to avoid additional infections among staff who treat patients. The broader regional context, with the outbreak already causing hundreds of deaths in the DRC, raises concerns about cross‑border transmission, especially given the patient’s recent travel from Uganda.

By mandating immediate isolation, the NCDC seeks to reduce the window of potential community exposure, thereby protecting both patients and the general public. Continuous monitoring of the 53 contacts for the full incubation period also provides data to assess the effectiveness of containment strategies.

What happens next

NCDC officials will continue daily monitoring of the identified contacts for the remainder of the 21‑day observation period. Hospitals are required to report any suspected Ebola cases promptly to public health authorities and to enforce isolation protocols without waiting for laboratory confirmation. The agency indicated that contact tracing efforts remain ongoing, with public health teams working to locate any additional individuals who may have been exposed. No further official statements on additional measures or upcoming reviews have been released as of the latest reports.
