Opening ceremony On Thursday 15 October 2026, Chinese state media reported that a formal ceremony marked the opening of the New Yalu River Bridge. The bridge, a cable‑stayed structure spanning 3,026 metres, connects the Chinese city of Dandong in Liaoning Province with Sinuiju on the North Korean side. Trucks bearing Chinese and North Korean flags crossed the bridge in both directions during the event, and the structure itself was decorated with national banners.

A decade of delay Construction of the bridge was finished in 2014, but it remained unused for twelve years. The delay was caused by incomplete roads and customs facilities on the North Korean side, as well as the impact of the COVID‑19 pandemic, which led to border closures. The bridge was therefore not operational until the current opening.

Significance for trade China is North Korea’s largest trading partner and a key source of goods that help the North cope with international sanctions. The new crossing is expected to become the main land route for trade between the two countries, offering an alternative to the older Sino‑Korean Friendship Bridge that has carried most traffic since the 1940s. Experts estimate that the new link could triple or quadruple cargo traffic, especially for heavy machinery and construction materials.

Economic outlook Bilateral trade between China and North Korea reached $2.7 billion last year, a recovery to pre‑pandemic levels largely driven by Chinese exports. While a sharp increase in trade is unlikely due to ongoing UN sanctions, the new bridge is seen as a vital infrastructure improvement that will facilitate freight movement and people‑to‑people exchanges.

Political context Chinese Premier Li Qiang addressed the ceremony via video, describing the bridge as a new landmark symbolising the traditional friendship between the two nations and announcing that bilateral relations were entering a new chapter. The opening follows two recent summits between the leaders of Beijing and Pyongyang.

Current status Although the bridge is now operational, North Korea has not yet resumed issuing tourist visas to Chinese visitors, and the road and compound on the North Korean side remain incomplete. Nevertheless, residents in Dandong anticipate that the new link will bring increased business opportunities and improve living standards across the border.

Future prospects The New Yalu River Bridge represents a tangible step toward revitalising trade and connectivity between China and North Korea. Its opening may reduce reliance on the ageing Friendship Bridge and support the development of border‑area infrastructure, signalling a cautious but optimistic outlook for the two countries’ economic cooperation.
