MTN Nigeria has provided a detailed explanation for the rapid depletion of internet data bundles among its subscribers, attributing the issue to user-driven activities rather than deliberate deduction by the telecommunications operator. The company identified high-resolution video streaming, automatic downloads, and background applications as the primary factors consuming data unexpectedly. This clarification was made to address widespread complaints from customers who feel their data finishes faster than anticipated.
The explanation was delivered by Mike Ndukwe, MTN Nigeria’s General Manager of Network Performance, during a forum titled “Data on Trial” held in Abuja on Monday, October 26, 2026. The event took place on the sidelines of the 32nd Nigerian Economic Summit. Ndukwe acknowledged the frustration felt by subscribers, noting that every amount of data counts in the current economic climate. He firmly denied allegations that the operator steals data, stating that consumption occurs only through actions initiated by the user or processes running automatically on their devices.
Background
Ndukwe highlighted specific applications responsible for significant data usage, including TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, and WhatsApp. According to him, the amount of data used by a fifteen-second TikTok clip varies from two to twenty megabytes, contingent upon the selected resolution. While text messages on WhatsApp require minimal data, features such as status updates, video sharing, group media, and automatic downloads can significantly increase consumption. Ndukwe pointed out that if WhatsApp is set to auto-download media, it immediately impacts the user’s data bundle. He further revealed that annual data usage in Nigeria has risen by roughly forty-three percent, a trend that mirrors the expansion of online engagement. Additionally, he mentioned that WhatsApp has approximately 45 million users in the country, while TikTok is a major generator of data traffic.
David Ogunsola, MTN Nigeria’s General Manager of IT Operations, addressed discrepancies between data usage figures displayed on smartphones and those recorded by the network. He explained that differences of up to 12 per cent can arise due to varying measurement methods, background traffic, session timing, and rounding practices. Ogunsola clarified that the data measured on devices differs slightly from what traverses the network and is subject to charging.
Why it matters
This clarification is significant for millions of Nigerian subscribers who rely on mobile data for communication and entertainment. By identifying specific settings and applications that drive high consumption, MTN aims to help users manage their bundles more effectively. To help customers stretch their allowances, the firm recommended restricting background transfers, relying on Wi-Fi for syncing and saving files, and reducing the clarity of streamed videos. MTN and Xiaomi have jointly recommended these adjustments to optimize data efficiency. The 43 per cent year-on-year increase in data consumption highlights the rising demand for mobile internet services in Nigeria, making efficient usage strategies increasingly important for cost-conscious consumers.
What happens next
MTN Nigeria encourages users to monitor their consumption through the MyMTN application and adjust their phone settings accordingly. The company has not announced new pricing structures or changes to data plans in response to these complaints, but the focus remains on educating subscribers about how their device configurations impact data usage. The “Data on Trial” forum serves as a platform for ongoing dialogue between telecommunications operators and consumers regarding data transparency and usage patterns.
