Kurtley Beale recalled to Wallabies for UK spring tour ahead of 2027 Rugby World Cup

At 37, veteran playmaker Kurtley Beale has been added to the Australian squad for the Spring Tour of the UK, replacing Hunter Paisami. The recall comes as coach Les Kiss looks to stabilise the Wallabies’ number 10 position before next year’s World Cup.

Kurtley Beale returns to the Wallabies

On Wednesday, 28 October 2026, coach Les Kiss announced that 37‑year‑old veteran Kurtley Beale would join the Australian squad for the Spring Tour of the United Kingdom. The recall follows Beale’s last Test appearance against Wales in 2021 and comes five years after he last represented the Wallabies. Midfielder Hunter Paisami, who is absent due to private matters, will be succeeded by Beale. James Ramm and Kalani Thomas were also named to the touring group. Prior to the first Nations Championship finals held in the UK between 21 and 23 November, the tour includes three Tests against England, Scotland, and Wales.

Background

Kurtley Beale has accumulated 95 Test caps for Australia and has played for the Western Force in Super Rugby. His return follows a period of instability at the number 10 position for the Wallabies. Since Bernard Foley’s tenure under coach Michael Cheika, the team has used nearly a dozen different playmakers, including Noah Lolesio, Ben Donaldson, Carter Gordon, Tane Edmed and Harry McLaughlin‑Phillips. Veteran players including James O’Connor, Quade Cooper, and Matt Toomua have likewise found it difficult to obtain the position. Coach Les Kiss, who succeeded Michael Cheika, has reportedly considered a “shock recall” of Beale as a way to bring experience and stability to the backline. This choice arrives while Australia occupies the seventh spot in global standings following their 23rd straight defeat in the Bledisloe Cup.

Why it matters

The inclusion of Beale is a significant talking point for Australian rugby. His experience and proven playmaking ability are seen as potential solutions to the Wallabies’ revolving door of five‑eighths. The move is expected to influence the team’s performance in the upcoming Tests against England, Scotland and Wales, and could shape the squad’s preparation for the 2027 Rugby World Cup. The recall also highlights the challenges faced by the Wallabies in maintaining a consistent number 10. By bringing back a veteran, the coaching staff aims to reduce uncertainty and improve the team’s attacking structure.

What happens next

The Wallabies will play their three Tests against England, Scotland and Wales in the coming month. The outcomes of these matches, along with the team’s performance in the Nations Championship finals, will inform selections and strategies for the 2027 Rugby World Cup. No further dates or decisions have been announced beyond the inclusion of Beale, Ramm and Thomas in the touring squad.
