Japan launches MMX probe to collect samples from Mars’s moon Phobos
Japan’s H3 rocket successfully lifted off with the Martian Moons eXploration (MMX) spacecraft, which will orbit Phobos, deploy the IDEFIX rover, and return at least 10 g of material to Earth in 2031.

Launch and launch vehicle At 4:41 a.m. local time on 20 October 2026, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) launched its flagship H3 rocket from the Tanegashima Space Center in Kagoshima Prefecture. The 9,900‑lb MMX spacecraft separated from the booster about an hour after liftoff and began its journey toward the Martian system.
Mission objectives The Martian Moons eXploration (MMX) mission is the first attempt to land on a Martian moon and bring samples back to Earth. The primary goal is to determine whether Phobos and Deimos were formed by a giant impact early in the solar system’s history or were captured asteroids. Samples of at least 10 g will be returned in 2031, providing data that could reshape understanding of the Mars system.
Phobos operations MMX is scheduled to arrive at Mars in August 2027, where it will enter orbit that keeps it in sync with Phobos. A French‑German rover named IDEFIX will be the first vehicle to traverse the moon’s surface, performing observations that will help ensure a safe landing for the probe.
International collaboration The mission is a joint effort involving the United States, European space agencies, universities and technology companies. The collaboration aims to lay groundwork for future human exploration of Mars and its moons.
Significance By bringing back material from Phobos, scientists hope to unlock clues about the early solar system and the origins of life on Earth. The data will also inform NASA’s plans for human missions to Mars.
Public reception Thousands of viewers tuned into JAXA’s live stream, sending messages of encouragement to the launch team. JAXA officials expressed relief and excitement after confirming the probe’s successful separation from the rocket.
Timeline * 20 Oct 2026 – Launch from Tanegashima * Aug 2027 – Arrival at Mars and orbit insertion * 2027‑2030 – Three‑year stay around Mars, Phobos operations and sample collection * 2031 – Return of samples to Earth
The MMX mission marks a historic first for robotic exploration of a Martian moon and is expected to provide unprecedented insights into the planet’s history and the broader origins of the solar system.
