Iranian news outlets reported that blasts were detected on Saturday in the port city of Jask and on Qeshm Island, which sits within the Strait of Hormuz. The Iranian semi-official Tasnim news agency stated that two missiles had struck Qeshm Island, although it did not specify who fired them. There was no official confirmation from the Iranian government regarding the source of the explosions or any information on potential damage. These events took place shortly after American forces attacked the island, an action a US representative characterized as restricted in scope rather than a return to large-scale fighting.
Background
The current conflict between the United States and Iran began on February 28 with US-Israeli strikes. The war has lasted for eight months, during which the US has maintained a blockade on Iranian ports. Regional countries had anticipated that US President Donald Trump might restart attacks following the midterm elections held in the previous week. Iran has repeatedly stated that it would respond to new attacks by striking US and Israeli targets in neighboring countries. The Strait of Hormuz, through which approximately one-fifth of global oil normally passes, has been a focal point of the conflict. Iran has made overtures to control the strait, potentially charging fees for safe passage, and has discussed the future administration of the waterway with Oman. Oman’s foreign minister, Badr Albusaidi, has spoken with Iran about registering proposals for the strait's administration with the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).
Why it matters
Doha has put forward a fresh initiative aimed at terminating the hostilities and resuming maritime transit via the Strait of Hormuz. Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, the emir of Qatar, spoke with President Trump about a vision for a deal, according to Qatari media. Al-Thani stated that the Trump government is open to resolving the issue following the midterm polls, which signaled public disapproval of how the war was affecting gasoline costs. The Qatari draft requires Washington to remove its embargo on Iranian harbors and unfreeze a portion of the 6 billion pounds in seized Iranian funds. In exchange, the Islamic Republic would permit inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency to access its primary nuclear sites prior to allowing commercial vessels back into the waterway. Crucially, the proposal does not require Iran to give up its nuclear stockpiles, addressing the US casus belli that Iran should never acquire nuclear weapons. The conflict has also created secondary issues, including parallel clashes in Lebanon, the presence of US forces in the region, and demands for war reparations. Since September, Tehran has advocated for a seven-day ceasefire strategy that includes ending the blockade, restoring frozen assets, and validating an Iran-supported shipping lane, though the Trump administration has dismissed this offer. A high-ranking Iranian representative informed Reuters that a separate nuclear accord has also been conveyed to Washington via Doha.
