Attack on Obi‑Kwankwaso rally in Asaba

On Saturday, 7 November 2026, a large gathering of supporters of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Asaba, Delta State, was attacked. The rally, part of a one‑million‑man march backing presidential candidate Peter Obi and running mate Rabiu Kwankwaso, was disrupted by suspected thugs. The attackers, described as armed with sticks, knives, machetes and other weapons, smashed several campaign vehicles and injured a number of participants.

The assault followed a similar incident in Effurun, where the NDC rally was also disrupted. In Asaba, footage showed the attackers confronting supporters, smashing vehicle windscreens and damaging other parts of the cars. Some of the alleged attackers were later apprehended and counter‑mob activity was seen as police intervened.

Background

The NDC, led by Peter Obi, has been campaigning for the 2027 presidential election. Obi’s running mate is former governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, and the party’s candidate for Delta North Senatorial District is Victor Ochei, a former Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly. The Delta State government is led by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In the wake of the attack, Ochei called on Governor Oborevwori to order an immediate investigation and to ensure that those responsible were arrested and prosecuted. He accused the APC of using intimidation tactics instead of issue‑based engagement, and warned that Delta should not become a theatre of political violence.

Favour Emerue, a Delta State coordinator of the Obi‑Kwankwaso Movement and one of the organisers of the march, said the gathering was peaceful until the disruption. He claimed that several attendees were hurt and are currently undergoing treatment. Emerue cautioned that the governor would face accountability should any citizen die due to political unrest, while urging law enforcement bodies to identify and bring the perpetrators to justice.

Engineer Thompson Omoneje, an NDC coordinator, also described the incident. He described the assailants as wearing dark clothing and arriving on commercial three-wheelers, noting they were reportedly connected to drivers in the COMATOA district of Asaba. Omoneje reported that the assailants shattered the car's front glass and inflicted harm on other sections of the automobile.

Why it matters

The attack highlights the growing political tension in Delta State ahead of the 2027 elections. The NDC’s supporters were targeted by suspected APC‑aligned thugs, raising concerns about the safety of political activists and the potential for violence to disrupt democratic processes. The incident has prompted the Delta State government to direct security agencies to investigate and prosecute anyone found culpable, underscoring a zero‑tolerance stance on political violence.

The damage to campaign vehicles—more than 30 buses were reportedly destroyed—has financial implications for the NDC’s campaign operations in the state. The injury of supporters also raises public health concerns and may affect voter turnout if fear of violence persists.

What happens next

The state government has ordered a thorough investigation into the incident. Governor Oborevwori has directed security agencies to investigate and prosecute those responsible. Charles Aniagwu, the State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, emphasized that partisan competition should not escalate into brutality or coercion, affirming the administration's absolute refusal to accept political aggression.

No further dates or specific actions have been announced beyond the call for investigation and prosecution. The incident remains a point of contention between the NDC and APC, with the former demanding accountability and the latter maintaining that the attack was an isolated incident.
