The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) issued a statement on 4 November 2026 disavowing Archbishop Chivir Chianson’s claim to be its General Secretary. CAN President Archbishop Daniel Okoh clarified that Chianson has no mandate to speak or act on behalf of the umbrella body and that the group he represents is not affiliated with CAN. The association also warned that it would not tolerate the use of its name to mobilise support for any political candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections, reaffirming its commitment to political neutrality.

Okoh’s statement emphasized that any political endorsement or activity attributed to Chianson or his group should not be mistaken for the official position of CAN. He warned that the association would take steps to protect its identity and institutional integrity from unauthorised representation, urging media outlets and the public to verify the credentials of anyone claiming to act for CAN.

Background

The dispute arose after Chianson, who serves as Secretary‑General of the Charismatic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), allegedly claimed the role of CAN’s General Secretary and was linked to a group that purportedly sought to rally Christian support for President Bola Tinubu’s re‑election. The CBCN, a body of charismatic and Pentecostal leaders, had publicly endorsed Tinubu during its 2026 synod, with Archbishop Leonard Bature Kawas announcing the endorsement on television. Chianson is reported to have predicted on a national TV programme that Tinubu would win the 2027 poll, claiming divine guidance for the outcome, although the Punch outlet could not confirm the exact wording of his statement.

CAN, as the umbrella organisation representing Christians across Nigeria, has historically maintained a stance of political neutrality, engaging with national issues objectively while holding leaders accountable regardless of party affiliation. The current clarification follows concerns that individuals were exploiting the association’s reputation to influence the upcoming electoral process.

Why it matters

The clarification directly impacts Christian communities and political observers who might otherwise interpret Chianson’s statements as reflecting the official stance of the nation’s largest Christian body. By distancing itself from any political mobilisation, CAN aims to prevent the perception that it is endorsing a particular candidate, which could affect voter behaviour among its members. The association’s warning to media organisations also seeks to curb misinformation that could sway public opinion or undermine the credibility of the electoral process. Maintaining neutrality is presented as essential for preserving the association’s role in national development and for safeguarding the interests of Christians in a politically charged environment.

What happens next

CAN indicated that it would continue to monitor and address any unauthorised use of its name, though no specific legal actions or timelines were detailed in the statements. The association reaffirmed its intention to engage objectively with national issues and to hold political leaders accountable as the 2027 general elections approach, without endorsing any party or candidate.
