Helen Haines, the 65‑year‑old independent member of parliament for Indi, suffered a serious injury when a white Toyota Land Cruiser SUV struck her outside her constituency office in Wangaratta, Victoria, on Monday 19 October 2026.

Doctors performed emergency surgery that night, amputating Haines’ left leg. Over the following days surgeons attempted to preserve her right leg but ultimately had to amputate it as well. Haines is now in a stable condition, according to her husband Phil Haines, who has spoken publicly about her resilience.

Phil Haines said that Haines’ heart and mind are in good shape and that she is a “fighter.” He added that the couple will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary in November and that they have welcomed four grandchildren in the last four months.

Police have described the incident as a targeted attack on a public official. The suspect, 43‑year‑old Brendan Nugent of Tarrawingee, was charged with dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury and harming a federal official. Court documents also list cannabis‑related charges. Nugent appeared in Wangaratta Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, did not speak and has a further hearing scheduled for 4 February.

The assault has prompted a broader discussion about the safety of elected representatives in Australia, a country where political violence is rare but has seen a rise in threats and abuse toward officials. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has issued tributes to Haines, highlighting her work on transparency and anti‑corruption.

Counter‑terrorism investigators have joined the police probe, and the incident has attracted media coverage from national broadcasters such as ABC and the Sydney Morning Herald. Witnesses reported hearing a bang before seeing Haines pinned between two vehicles.

Haines’ hospital stay has involved intensive care and a prolonged recovery plan. Phil Haines thanked first responders and the community for their support, urging continued messages of love for his wife.

The case remains under investigation, with authorities considering additional charges against Nugent. The incident has underscored the need for heightened security measures for lawmakers across the nation.
