The All Progressives Congress (APC) formally commenced its campaign for the 2027 general elections in Enugu State on Wednesday, holding a rally at Nsukka Township Stadium. The event attracted a large crowd of party faithful, political office holders, traditional and community leaders, and supporters from the three senatorial districts. Party leaders and stakeholders used the occasion to mobilise voters and reaffirm their commitment to re‑elect Governor Peter Mbah and to support President Bola Tinubu’s re‑election bid.

Governor Mbah addressed the gathering, outlining his administration’s achievements and ongoing projects across security, infrastructure, education, health care and economic development. He urged residents to judge his performance by the tangible improvements he cited, noting that the opposition had not presented a manifesto. The governor highlighted recent road works, including the dualisation of the Penoks‑T‑Junction‑Ugwogo‑Nsukka road, which he said had cut travel time dramatically and enhanced safety. He also referenced the 40‑kilometre Owo‑Ubahu‑Amankanu‑Umualor‑Ikem dual carriageway that links northern communities and serves as a gateway to the North Central region.

In education, Mbah spoke of the Smart Green Schools initiative aimed at improving learning outcomes and preparing students for a modern economy. He announced the recruitment of more than 6,000 additional teachers who were undergoing training, signalling a push to bolster the state’s human‑resource capacity.

Background

Enugu’s political landscape has been dominated by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for several election cycles. The APC’s decision to flag off its campaign in Nsukka—a strategic location within the state’s central senatorial district—signals an effort to broaden its appeal beyond traditional strongholds. Governor Peter Mbah, who assumed office in 2023, has focused on infrastructure projects such as road dualisation and the Owo‑Ubahu‑Amankanu‑Umualor‑Ikem corridor, as well as educational reforms under the Smart Green Schools programme. President Bola Tinubu, seeking re‑election in 2027, has been a central figure in APC’s national campaign, and his endorsement is a key element of the party’s strategy in the southeast.

Why it matters

The campaign launch underscores the APC’s intent to challenge the PDP’s dominance in Enugu, a state that contributes a significant number of votes in national elections. Improved roads and expanded educational facilities, as highlighted by Governor Mbah, are intended to demonstrate tangible benefits of the party’s governance, potentially influencing voter sentiment. The recruitment of thousands of teachers may affect the quality of education and public perception of the state’s commitment to human‑capital development. Success for the APC in Enugu could bolster President Tinubu’s re‑election prospects by adding a southeastern foothold to his support base.

What happens next

The APC plans to continue its voter mobilisation across Enugu’s three senatorial districts throughout the lead‑up to the 2027 elections. Party officials indicated that further rallies and community engagements are scheduled, though specific dates were not disclosed. The effectiveness of the campaign will be measured against voter turnout and the eventual election results, which are expected to be announced in early 2028.
