Prof Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), asserted that President Bola Tinubu has achieved more for Plateau State than any former Nigerian president. Speaking at the PBAT Door‑to‑Door Movement rally in Jos on Wednesday, Yilwatda highlighted a range of projects in education, health, infrastructure and security that he said were initiated under Tinubu’s tenure. He urged APC supporters in the state to back Tinubu’s bid for a second term in the 2027 presidential election, arguing that Plateau has no reason to endorse any other candidate.

Yilwatda challenged former vice‑president Atiku Abubakar, now the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, to name a single project worth N10 billion that was completed in Plateau during Abubakar’s eight‑year vice‑presidency. He contrasted past efforts, which he described as limited to a borehole or a Keke Napep vehicle, with the current administration’s delivery of a university and multiple large‑scale initiatives. He also claimed that Tinubu had addressed the state’s primary concern of insecurity.

Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang also voiced support for Tinubu at the rally. Mutfwang recounted a meeting with the president on 6 June 2023, after which he became convinced of Tinubu’s commitment to Nigeria despite previously belonging to a different political party. He acknowledged ongoing national challenges but affirmed that security projects were progressing and that the president was determined to dismantle criminal networks across the state and the country.

Background

The APC’s national chairman, Prof Nentawe Yilwatda, is a senior party figure who leads the organisation’s strategic direction. His statements were made during the PBAT Door‑to‑Door Movement, a campaign effort aimed at mobilising voters across Plateau State ahead of the 2027 presidential election. The rally also featured Governor Caleb Mutfwang, who assumed office in 2023 and has been navigating security and development issues in the state. Tinubu, elected president in 2023, has faced criticism over national security and economic performance, prompting the APC to intensify its outreach in key regions such as Plateau.

Why it matters

The claims made by Yilwatda and Mutfwang seek to influence voter sentiment in Plateau, a state that can be pivotal in the upcoming presidential election. By emphasizing infrastructure, education and security projects, the APC aims to portray Tinubu as a development‑focused leader, contrasting him with opposition candidates like Atiku Abubakar. If the rally’s messaging resonates, it could bolster Tinubu’s support base and affect the overall electoral dynamics, given the importance of regional endorsements in Nigeria’s political landscape.

What happens next

The APC plans to continue its door‑to‑door mobilisation across Plateau State, with the goal of reaching “every nook and cranny” to secure votes for Tinubu’s 2027 campaign. The party has not announced a specific timeline for further rallies, but the ongoing movement suggests sustained campaigning through the months leading up to the election.
