Zelensky meets US envoys ahead of Abu Dhabi talks

On 5 November 2026, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that he had spoken in detail with U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff and former President Donald Trump’s son‑in‑law Jared Kushner. The conversation lasted about an hour and a half and was held while Zelensky was in Madrid. The conversation arises at a time when Ukraine, Russia, and the U.S. are getting ready to convene in Abu Dhabi on November 10 and 11 for the initial three-nation dialogue since February. The meetings are intended to advance negotiations that could bring an end to the war that has been raging for five years.

Background

These tripartite negotiations form a component of a wider diplomatic campaign that also features gatherings in Brussels involving delegates from the EU, the UK, NATO, and America. In addition, U.S. First Lady Melania Trump has announced that she will host a meeting between Russian and Ukrainian officials at the White House, though a date has not yet been set. According to TASS, which referenced Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, Russian representatives such as international economic cooperation advisor Kirill Dmitriev and human rights commissioner Yana Lantratova have signaled their intent to participate in the White House gathering, provided logistical arrangements permit. Ukrainian human rights commissioner Dmytro Lubinets likewise intends to hold a meeting with Ms. Trump in Washington. A month earlier, Ms Trump announced a localised ceasefire between Ukrainian and Russian forces in the Oleshky area, allowing residents to evacuate after weeks of shortages. The temporary halt was respected by both sides and led to the demolition of roads to prevent further fighting. For his role in brokering the partial ceasefire, Zelensky awarded Ms Trump a national honour.

Why it matters

The upcoming Abu Dhabi talks are the first opportunity for all three parties to negotiate directly since the start of the conflict. A successful outcome could accelerate a ceasefire and potentially lead to a broader peace settlement. The involvement of U.S. envoys and the White House indicates a high level of international engagement, while the participation of Russian officials signals a willingness from Moscow to engage. The talks also come amid concerns that the United States might withdraw support for Ukraine following a recent rapprochement between former President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Zelensky’s statement that Ukraine is ready to take necessary steps underscores the urgency of the negotiations.

What happens next

The trilateral meetings are scheduled for 10 and 11 November in Abu Dhabi. No further details have been released about the agenda or potential outcomes. The White House has not yet set a date for the meeting between Russian and Ukrainian officials that Ms Trump will host. The European Union, United Kingdom, NATO and United States will continue to hold parallel discussions in Brussels.
