President Tinubu Opens Victor Attah International Airport
On Friday, 6 November 2026, President Bola Tinubu flew into Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State, to commission the Victor Attah International Airport. The ceremony also saw the inauguration of an international terminal building, an airport hospital and the Ibom Aviation Village, all projects completed under Governor Umo Eno’s administration. During the event, Tinubu described the visit as a homecoming, recalling his earlier work as a Mobil auditor in the state. He said he had helped develop the communities of Ibeno and Eket while working for the oil company. The airport, originally called Ibom International Airport, was renamed after former governor Victor Attah in November 2018 by successor Udom Emmanuel. The Federal Government granted the airport international designation in November 2025, paving the way for Ibom Air to launch its inaugural service from Uyo to Accra, Ghana, in May 2026.
Background
Tinubu’s ties with Akwa Ibom state trace back to his career within the petroleum industry. After stints with Deloitte and GTE Corporation, he joined Mobil Oil Nigeria and rose from the audit department to the company’s treasurer. In 2012, he revealed that he had been recruited into Mobil’s corporate division. The airport’s development was a key part of Governor Umo Eno’s agenda. After switching allegiance from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress in June 2025, Eno announced his backing for Tinubu’s campaign for a second term. The head of state is also expected to be present at an All Progressives Congress gathering held at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.
Why it matters
The inauguration underscores the federal government’s investment in regional infrastructure. The airport’s international status is expected to boost tourism and trade for Akwa Ibom. These associated developments, which include the Airport‑Okopedi Road, Ring Road 3, the AKWA‑GIS Office Complex, the Command and Control Centre, and the ARISE Palm Resort, are designed to enhance transportation links and stimulate the local economy. Tinubu’s remarks highlighted the importance of continuity in governance. He praised Governor Eno for translating vision into reality, stressing that residents should recognise the value of sustained leadership.
What happens next
The airport is already operational for international flights, with Ibom Air’s maiden route to Accra. No further dates or decisions were announced in the coverage. The president’s visit coincides with preparations for the 2027 general elections, during which Tinubu’s support from Akwa Ibom may play a role.
