The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced the arrest of more than 30 individuals suspected of vandalising electricity infrastructure. The detentions primarily target activities along the Kumbotso–Zaria transmission line corridor, which spans parts of Kano and Kaduna states. M.K. Bello, the Kano Regional General Manager for TCN, disclosed the figures on Wednesday during a public sensitisation campaign held in Paki community, located in the Ikara Local Government Area of Kaduna State. The event was organised to raise awareness against encroachment on transmission lines and to prevent further damage to critical power facilities.

Bello stated that the successful arrests were the result of a collaborative effort between TCN, local residents, traditional rulers, the police, and other security agencies. He expressed gratitude to the community, specifically highlighting the support of the district head and law enforcement bodies in protecting the transmission infrastructure. The company is currently pursuing legal action against the suspects, with five cases already before the courts regarding these infractions. The arrests are part of a broader strategy to reduce disruptions to electricity supply in the region by securing the physical integrity of the power grid.

Background

The Kumbotso–Zaria transmission line is a vital artery for electricity distribution, carrying power over distances ranging from 200 to 300 kilometres. TCN officials have expressed significant concern over recent trends in the area, including excavation, construction activities, and the digging of pits in close proximity to transmission towers. Bello warned that such activities weaken the structural integrity of the towers, posing a risk of collapse. He noted that approximately ten transmission towers were vandalised within a period of four to five months in 2026. The company emphasised that replacing damaged towers requires substantial financial resources and causes significant delays in power restoration. The sensitisation campaign in Paki aimed to educate the public on the dangers of these activities and to encourage reporting of suspected vandalism to the appropriate authorities.

Why it matters

The stability of the Kumbotso–Zaria corridor is crucial for the reliable supply of electricity to the region. Damage to any supporting tower can lead to widespread power outages, affecting both residential and commercial consumers. The financial burden of repairing or replacing vandalised infrastructure is significant, diverting resources that could otherwise be used for network expansion or maintenance. By securing the cooperation of traditional institutions and security agencies, TCN aims to create a sustainable environment where public assets are protected. The District Head of Paki, Ja’afaru Paki, commended TCN for engaging with the community, stating that the visit has encouraged traditional institutions to intensify their efforts in monitoring and protecting public property. This collaborative approach is seen as essential for deterring future incidents and ensuring the long-term reliability of the power grid in the northern part of Nigeria.

What happens next

TCN has urged residents in the affected areas to avoid any activities that could endanger transmission towers, such as digging or construction near the structures. The company has called on the public to report any suspected vandalism or encroachment to the relevant authorities immediately. With five cases currently under judicial review, the legal proceedings against the arrested individuals are expected to continue. TCN plans to maintain its engagement with local communities and security partners to monitor the situation and prevent further damage to the transmission infrastructure along the corridor.
