South‑East Governors Urge Igbo Voters to Back President Tinubu in 2027 Election
Four governors from Nigeria’s South‑East region appealed to Igbo voters to support President Bola Tinubu’s re‑election, citing ongoing federal development projects and economic reforms.

During an All Progressives Congress (APC) women’s mega rally in Enugu, four South‑East governors called on Igbo voters to cast their ballots for President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election. The appeal was made on 31 October 2026 at Okpara Square, where First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu officially launched the empowerment programme. Governors Peter Mbah of Enugu, Hope Uzodimma of Imo, Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi and Charles Soludo of Anambra addressed the crowd, urging a united vote to sustain what they described as the benefits of Tinubu’s economic reforms.
Governor Mbah highlighted a series of development projects in Enugu, including “Smart Green Schools” and Type 2 primary health‑care centres, which he attributed to the president’s reforms. He urged voters to “come out in our numbers” on 16 January, the date set for the presidential vote, and to support APC candidates in the subsequent state elections in January and February. Governor Uzodimma echoed the sentiment, noting that the Igbo have endured marginalisation for over six decades but are now witnessing increased political inclusion and infrastructure development under Tinubu’s administration.
Background
This demonstration was a component of the APC Women Mega Rally and Empowerment Programme for the South-East, a project designed to uplift 5,000 women within the area. The event followed a prior effort that saw more than 2,000 women in Enugu receive assistance, including payment of hospital bills, within 48 hours of the First Lady’s visit. The collective declaration from the governors was presented as a counter to what they called deception and political diversions, while Mbah characterized the Igbo as strategic individuals who have established commercial ventures and connections outside their specific region.
All four governors belong to the ruling APC and have been vocal supporters of Tinubu since his 2023 election. Their appeal comes amid a broader national discourse on the president’s economic agenda, which includes increased federal allocations to states for health, education and infrastructure. The governors specifically cited improvements in roads linking major towns such as Okigwe, Owerri, Umuahia and Port Harcourt, as well as expanded electricity and health reforms.
Why it matters
The endorsement carries significant weight in a region where ethnic and regional voting patterns have historically influenced national outcomes. By urging a coordinated vote, the governors aim to consolidate APC support and secure Tinubu’s re‑election, which they argue will ensure continuity of the development projects currently underway. The emphasis on women’s empowerment also signals an attempt to mobilise a key demographic ahead of the election.
If the governors’ appeal succeeds, the APC could maintain its control over both the presidency and the majority of state legislatures in the South‑East, potentially shaping policy implementation for the next five years. Conversely, a fragmented vote could open space for opposition candidates to make inroads in a region that has been a political battleground in past elections.
What happens next
The next major electoral milestone is the presidential election scheduled for 16 January 2027, followed by state elections in January and February 2027. The governors have pledged to campaign for Tinubu and APC candidates throughout the remaining months, leveraging the women’s empowerment programme as a platform for voter outreach. No further official statements on additional rallies or campaign activities have been reported.
