Scale of the outbreak The Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control Programme in Plateau State disclosed that the 2026 estimate for TB cases stands at about 11,000 individuals. This figure is derived from a prevalence rate of 219 cases per 100,000 residents. A recent quarterly survey added that 2,047 patients were diagnosed and started on treatment during the three‑month period from July to September.
Factors driving transmission According to the programme’s monitoring officer, the disease spreads primarily through airborne bacteria. Several conditions in the state amplify the risk, including poor nutrition, advanced age, weakened immune systems, and crowded living environments. Children under five and people living with HIV are particularly vulnerable, as are those who face stigma or hold misconceptions about the illness, such as attributing it to spiritual or ritual causes.
National context A senior officer from the Global Fund‑supported Integrated Community‑Led Monitoring project noted that Nigeria leads Africa and ranks sixth worldwide for the combined burden of tuberculosis and TB/HIV co‑infection. The country also carries the world’s highest number of malaria cases and the second‑largest HIV/AIDS burden. Co‑infection of malaria and TB among people living with HIV is reported to be common, and the interaction can intensify the severity and transmissibility of both diseases.
Response and advocacy The data were presented at the first bi‑annual media‑focused advocacy meeting for the Global Fund AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria Integrated Community‑Led Monitoring project, held in Jos. Officials used the platform to call for increased awareness, better diagnostic coverage, and stronger community engagement to counter stigma and misinformation. They emphasized that addressing underlying risk factors such as malnutrition and overcrowding is essential for reducing transmission.
Outlook While the identification of over two thousand new cases in a single quarter demonstrates active surveillance, the overall estimate of 11,000 cases underscores that tuberculosis remains a significant public‑health challenge in Plateau State. Health authorities plan to continue quarterly monitoring, expand treatment access, and collaborate with national and international partners to curb the disease’s spread.
