Background A Nigerian Air Force aircraft crashed in the community of Igbokoda, the headquarters of Ilaje Local Government Area in Ondo State, during the previous week. Residents reported a pervasive foul smell emanating from the river that runs through the town, raising concerns about possible contamination of a water source that supports local livelihoods.

Government response On 14 October 2026, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa issued a directive, communicated through a statement signed by the state Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Idowu Ajanaku. The governor instructed the Ministries of Environment and Health to commence comprehensive fumigation of the Igbokoda River. The aim, according to the statement, is to mitigate any health risks and avert a potential outbreak of disease linked to the crash site.

In addition to fumigation, the governor ordered the distribution of essential health kits, including nose masks, to residents of Igbokoda and neighbouring communities. The kits are intended to protect people from possible airborne contaminants while the river is being treated.

Water supply measures Recognising that the river is a primary source of water for the area, the administration also directed the Ilaje Local Government to arrange for water tankers to deliver safe drinking water to households. This provision will remain in place until investigations confirm whether the river is severely polluted and unsuitable for consumption. The temporary water supply is described as an emergency measure pending a lasting solution to any confirmed contamination.

Health and environmental concerns The combined actions reflect the state’s effort to address both immediate public‑health fears and longer‑term environmental impacts of the crash. Officials highlighted that the river’s condition could affect not only drinking water but also fishing and other livelihood activities that depend on the waterway. By deploying fumigation, health kits and potable water, the government aims to reduce exposure to any hazardous substances that may have been released during the aircraft incident.

Outlook The directives were issued as recovery operations continue at the crash site. Authorities have not yet released detailed findings on the extent of pollution, but they have indicated that monitoring will continue and further interventions will be considered if necessary. The measures underscore the state’s commitment to safeguarding public health and environmental integrity in the wake of the accident.
