The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has stepped up its political organisation in Bayelsa State as the 2027 general elections approach. National Chairman Moses Zuwoghe addressed party leaders in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, urging deeper grassroots mobilisation, unity and disciplined coordination. Representatives from the local executive committees across the 17 wards of Southern Ijaw convened at the Headquarters Secretariat Complex of His Will Political Family Worldwide in Yenagoa, joining the party’s four candidates for the Bayelsa State House of Assembly and its nominee for the Southern Ijaw Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.
Simultaneously, Senator Henry Dickson, a former governor of Bayelsa and the National Leader of the NDC, received recognition from the Student Union Government and the Alumni Association of the University of Africa, Toru-Orua. He was decorated as Grand Patron of the alumni body and received an award for his contributions to educational development, notably the establishment of the university during his tenure as governor.
Zuwoghe warned that the NDC’s success in the upcoming elections would hinge on the strength of its grassroots structures and the commitment of officials at every level. He called for ward and local government leaders to increase engagement with residents, improve internal communication and ensure the party’s message of good governance and people‑centred leadership reaches communities across Southern Ijaw and the wider state.
Background
The NDC, a relatively new political force in Nigeria, has been seeking to expand its presence beyond its traditional strongholds. In Bayelsa, the party fielded four candidates for the State House of Assembly—Ogede Embeleakpo, Ifiemi Embiowei, Ziriki Godwill and Alfred Salvation—and one candidate, Leghemo Diepreye, for the Federal House of Representatives seat covering Southern Ijaw. The strategic meeting in Southern Ijaw was part of a broader effort to review organisational capacity, strengthen coordination and develop effective political engagement strategies.
Senator Henry Dickson, who served as Bayelsa governor from 2012 to 2020, has remained a prominent figure within the NDC. His recent honour from the University of Africa’s alumni reflects his ongoing influence in educational and political circles. The party also publicly condemned an alleged attack on the convoy of its presidential candidate, former governor Peter Obi, in Calabar, Cross River State, signalling its readiness to respond to security concerns affecting its campaign activities.
Why it matters
The intensified mobilisation in Bayelsa is significant because the state holds a substantial number of parliamentary seats and is a traditional stronghold for rival parties. Strengthening grassroots networks could enable the NDC to challenge established parties and potentially alter the balance of power in the 2027 elections. The involvement of all ward and local government executives suggests a concerted effort to embed the party’s platform at the community level.
Recognition of Henry Dickson underscores the NDC’s reliance on experienced political figures to lend credibility and attract support, particularly in the education sector where his legacy includes the founding of a university. The party’s condemnation of the reported assault on Peter Obi’s convoy highlights concerns over campaign safety and may influence public perception of the party’s stance on law and order.
What happens next
The NDC has indicated that its mobilisation drive will continue across Bayelsa State, with plans to replicate the Southern Ijaw strategy in other local government areas ahead of the 2027 electoral calendar. No specific dates for further meetings or additional organisational milestones were disclosed, but the party’s leadership signalled ongoing commitment to consolidating structures throughout the state.
