The Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) has officially unveiled the winners of the 10th Edition of its Annual National Undergraduate Essay Competition 2026. The ceremony took place in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, where the Board highlighted the critical role of youth development and local manufacturing in fostering a resilient economy. The event served as a platform to recognize academic excellence among undergraduates who engaged with themes related to the Nigerian oil and gas industry.
The overall winner, Mr. David Fabunmi Wisdom, a second-year physiotherapy undergraduate at the University of Ilorin in Kwara State, was presented with a one-million-naira cash award, a new laptop, and a commemorative plaque. The second-place finisher, Ms. Joy Oghogho Enogieru, a first-year optometry doctoral student at the University of Benin, collected a cash prize of 700,000 naira, a laptop, and a plaque. The third prize of N500,000, along with a laptop and a plaque, went to Mr. Ahmadu Kodan Yusuf, a 100-level Law student at Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria. Consolation prizes were also distributed to students who placed fourth through ninth.
Background
The competition attracted approximately 5,000 entries from 52 universities across all six geopolitical zones of Nigeria. The central focus of this year’s event was encouraging manufacturing to support sustainable local content growth. The NCDMB described the competition as a vital platform for encouraging research, analytical thinking, effective communication, and intellectual engagement among undergraduate students.
Dr. Obinna Ezeobi, who leads the Corporate Communications Division, stood in for Felix Omatsola Ogbe, the NCDMB’s Executive Secretary, during the ceremony. This substitution occurred at the Grand Finale. Dr. Ezeobi stated that the competition aligns with the Board’s mandate to develop human and material capacity and monitor compliance within the oil and gas sector. He explained that the Board fulfills its capacity-building role through various initiatives, including direct intervention trainings for graduates and artisans in both technical and non-technical skills. Furthermore, the Board supports human capital growth through project-based initiatives that require practical training on active projects, as required by the 2010 Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Content Development Act.
According to Dr. Ezeobi, universities are essential institutions for developing ideas, examining problems, and encouraging innovation. The Board engages students to think critically about Nigerian Content, noting that the ideas and ingenuity of young people are crucial for the future of the sector. The essay competition is linked to other youth-focused interventions by the Board, such as the establishment of Research Centres of Excellence, one of which is located at the Federal University of Technology in Owerri.
Why it matters
The NCDMB has underscored the strategic importance of integrating youth development with local manufacturing to promote sustainable local content. By targeting undergraduates, the Board aims to build a pipeline of skilled professionals who can contribute to the nation’s economic resilience. The competition serves not only as an academic exercise but as a practical tool for identifying and nurturing talent that can address challenges in the oil and gas industry. The Board’s emphasis on local manufacturing reflects a broader effort to reduce reliance on foreign inputs and strengthen domestic industrial capacity. The recognition of students from diverse disciplines, including Physiotherapy, Optometry, and Law, illustrates the Board’s commitment to engaging a wide range of academic backgrounds in the dialogue around Nigerian Content.
The distribution of significant monetary prizes and technological equipment, such as laptops, is intended to support the academic and professional growth of the winners. The involvement of 52 universities indicates a broad reach across the country, ensuring that students from different regions have the opportunity to participate and be recognized. The Board’s actions reflect its ongoing commitment to the provisions of the NOGICD Act, which prioritizes the development of local human resources and industrial capabilities.
