Mamadou Sangaré, a 24‑year‑old midfielder from Mali, transferred to Premier League side Brentford for a club‑record fee of £39 million at the start of August 2025. The deal followed his move from French club Lens, where he had been signed for around €5 million after a scouting visit to Rapid Vienna in July 2025. Shortly after signing for the club, Sangaré featured for Brentford in a match against Tottenham, where he controlled the midfield and set up Keane Lewis-Potter's first goal. He has featured in every Brentford match this season, with the next fixture against Brighton.

Tom Saintfiet, the former coach of Mali, called Sangaré an ideal player for any manager, highlighting the significant effect he had immediately after making his debut for the national side in a September 2024 game against Mozambique. Former scout Youness Bengelloun recalled first seeing Sangaré at Rapid Vienna’s training ground and being struck by his technique and work rate, which later convinced Lens to sign him.

Background

Sangaré’s football journey began at Association Sportive Aboubacar Coulibaly (ASAC) in the Faladié neighbourhood of Bamako, where he started playing at age six. Coach Bakary Coulibaly highlighted his early dedication, noting that Sangaré lived close to the pitch and displayed strong character and work ethic from the outset. After progressing through local ranks, he attracted attention from European scouts, leading to a brief stint at Rapid Vienna before moving to Lens in 2025. His performances at Lens earned him a reputation for technical skill and relentless energy, prompting Brentford to break their transfer record to secure his services.

Why it matters

The £39 million fee underscores Brentford’s ambition to compete at the highest level of English football, investing heavily in a player praised for both club and international contributions. Sangaré’s immediate influence on the pitch, including an assist on debut, suggests he could be pivotal in Brentford’s pursuit of higher league placement. For Mali, his development in a top European league enhances the national team’s profile, especially after his impactful debut against Mozambique. The transfer also reflects broader market trends, with Premier League clubs willing to spend significant sums on emerging talent from Africa.

What happens next

Brentford’s schedule places Sangaré against Brighton in the upcoming league match, providing another opportunity to assess his adaptation to the Premier League. No further official statements regarding future contract extensions or additional transfers have been released.
