Background of the incidents During the weekend of 17‑18 October 2026, masked Israeli settlers carried out two separate attacks in the occupied West Bank. On Friday, a group of settlers confronted Washington Post photojournalist Heidi Levine while she was documenting a Palestinian olive harvest. Video footage showed the journalists being assaulted, and medical reports later confirmed that Levine suffered a broken vertebra and required surgery on a finger after being taken to Beilinson Hospital.
The following day, a convoy of European diplomats travelling near the Christian village of Taybeh was targeted. The delegation, which included representatives from France, Belgium and Poland as well as French mayor Bernard Baudoux, was attacked and a Belgian diplomatic vehicle was damaged. Both incidents sparked immediate diplomatic protests.
Police response and arrests Israeli police announced that a pre‑dawn operation, described by some outlets as “Olive Leaf”, was conducted in coordination with the Shin Bet domestic security service and escorted by the Israel Defence Forces. The operation resulted in the detention of ten suspects, according to most reports, although one source listed eight arrests. The detainees, identified as Israeli citizens, were taken for questioning on suspicion of involvement in violent acts, breaching a closed‑military‑zone order and participating in illegal construction.
Police footage released after the raid showed at least one suspect wearing tzitzit, a traditional Jewish prayer garment, and the discovery of two slingshots at a property linked to the operation. Israeli police commissioner Daniel Levy reiterated that the law applies to all individuals regardless of identity, emphasizing the police’s commitment to impartial enforcement.
International reaction The United States, Israel’s closest ally, publicly urged a crackdown on settler violence and praised the arrests as a positive development. French, Belgian and Polish officials also called on Israeli authorities to hold the perpetrators accountable. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar and the military attributed the attacks to “Israeli rioters”, while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu suggested that the diplomats had entered a “sensitive area” without prior coordination with the military, noting that the exact circumstances of the attack on Levine remained unclear.
Wider context Human‑rights organisation Yesh Din reported that at least 170 settler‑related attacks had been recorded since 27 September 2026, underscoring a broader pattern of tension in the region. The recent incidents and subsequent arrests therefore occur against a backdrop of heightened scrutiny over settler behaviour and its impact on both Palestinian residents and foreign nationals operating in the West Bank.
Ongoing investigation Israeli police indicated that the investigation remains active, with additional enforcement actions targeting illegal outposts and violations of military orders. The detained suspects have not been publicly identified, and further legal proceedings are expected to follow the initial questioning phase.
