Britain’s Harriet Dart captured her first WTA Tour singles title at the Guangzhou Open on Sunday, overcoming Austria’s teenage prospect Lilli Tagger in a three‑set final, 4‑6, 6‑3, 6‑4. The 30‑year‑old, a qualifier and Britain’s No 5, rallied after losing the opening set, saving two championship points before sealing the win. The victory marks a career milestone for Dart, who had previously reached a career‑high ranking of 70 in 2024 but had spent most of the last two seasons outside the top 100.

Dart entered the tournament through qualifying and progressed to her first tour‑level final, defeating Sun Xinran in the semi‑final after saving three match points. In the final, she fell behind early, dropping serve in the first game and facing a break point in the second, before breaking back to level the first set at 4‑4. Tagger, the 53rd‑ranked Austrian, claimed the first set 6‑4. Dart then took the second set 6‑3, breaking Tagger at 5‑3, and completed the comeback with a 6‑4 third set, holding serve after saving two break points in the decisive stage.

Background

The Guangzhou Open is a WTA 250 event on the hard‑court swing in China. Dart, originally from Hampstead, has been a regular member of the GB Billie Jean King Cup team and has previously won a WTA 250 doubles title and two WTA 125 doubles titles. Her resurgence this season has been linked to coaching from former Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli, who also works as a Sky Sports analyst. Dart’s earlier career highlights include a third‑round appearance at Wimbledon and a second‑round showing at the US Open in 2024, after which she fell out of the top 100 for much of the following two years.

Why it matters

The triumph propels Dart back inside the world’s top 100, with the WTA rankings set to place her at No 83. This ranking ensures direct entry into the main draw of the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam of the 2027 season, removing the need for qualifying. The win also underscores Dart’s resilience, having recovered from first‑set deficits in four of her seven matches during the tournament, and highlights the impact of her partnership with Bartoli. For British tennis, Dart’s success adds to the growing list of home‑grown players achieving breakthrough results on the WTA Tour.

What happens next

Following the Guangzhou Open, Dart will prepare for the Australian Open in January, where her top‑100 ranking guarantees a spot in the main draw. The WTA will release updated rankings on Monday, confirming her exact position. Dart expressed gratitude to her support team, including her boyfriend Stephen Falck, fitness coach, family members, and coach Marion Bartoli, and indicated a desire to return to Guangzhou the following year.
