Chris Lynn’s one‑month suspension for cocaine use confirmed ahead of BBL season

Chris Lynn, the 36‑year‑old Australian cricketer who holds the Big Bash League (BBL) run‑scoring record, has had his one‑month anti‑doping suspension publicly disclosed. The ban, which covered the period from 31 July to 30 August 2026, was imposed after a urine sample taken on the day of England’s T20 Blast Finals Day in July tested positive for the cocaine metabolite benzoylecgonine. Lynn admitted to using cocaine on the evening of 15 July and the early hours of 16 July, stating the consumption occurred outside competition and did not enhance his performance.

The suspension was back‑dated and served in August, and the Cricket Regulator confirmed that the ban has now been completed. The regulator, an independent body set up in December 2023 to enforce anti‑doping rules, noted that Lynn had no therapeutic use exemption for the substance. An expert appointed by the regulator supported Lynn’s claim that the use was an out‑of‑competition violation, which led to the reduction of an initial three‑month sanction to one month after Lynn completed a substance‑of‑abuse treatment programme.

Background

Lynn’s positive test came after he helped Northamptonshire (Northants) win the T20 Blast title, contributing 39 runs in the semi‑final against Somerset and four runs in the final against Hampshire at Edgbaston on 18 July. This was his third spell with Northants, having previously scored 880 T20 runs for the county in 2022 and 2023. Prior to his stint with Northants, Lynn played for Hampshire in the 2025 Blast final, which they lost to Somerset. The Cricket Regulator’s findings indicated that Northants would not face any sanction for the positive test. Lynn’s ban was revealed by the Guardian on 6 November 2026, two months after it was served, coinciding with media speculation about a possible move to the Melbourne Renegades for the upcoming BBL season.

Why it matters

The disclosure of Lynn’s suspension is significant for several reasons. First, it confirms that a high‑profile player in the BBL has faced an anti‑doping sanction, reinforcing the regulator’s stance on substance abuse even when the drug is not performance‑enhancing. Second, the timing of the revelation, just before the BBL season begins, could impact contract negotiations and team selections, particularly rumours linking Lynn to the Melbourne Renegades. Third, the case highlights the role of treatment programmes in mitigating sanctions, as Lynn’s participation reduced his ban from three months to one. Finally, the regulator’s decision not to penalise Northants underscores the distinction between player responsibility and county liability in anti‑doping cases.

What happens next

With the suspension served, Lynn is eligible to play in the forthcoming BBL season, which starts next month. Media reports suggest that discussions about his potential signing with the Melbourne Renegades are ongoing, though no official confirmation has been made. The Cricket Regulator has not indicated any further disciplinary action, and Northants have not been approached for comment on the matter. Any future developments will depend on club negotiations and the player’s performance post‑treatment.
