Chris Brown sentenced for nightclub assault
On 26 October 2026, Southwark Crown Court in London imposed an eight‑month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, on American R&B singer Chris Brown. The sentence followed Brown’s guilty plea to affray in July for an incident that occurred on 19 February 2023 at the private members’ club Tape in Mayfair. Brown struck music producer Abraham “Abe” Diaw twice on the head with a glass tequila bottle, then struck him on the shoulder and attempted a further blow. The victim required hospital treatment.
Brown’s vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu (40), who joined the assault, was also sentenced. Akinlolu received a four‑month prison term, suspended for 12 months. Both men were ordered to pay £1,500 in court costs.
Judge Tony Baumgartner described the use of the bottle as “plainly dangerous” and noted that the violence was intense, lasting no more than 20 seconds in a crowded, confined space.
Background
The incident took place in the VIP area of Tape nightclub in the early hours of 19 February 2023. CCTV footage captured Brown striking Diaw with a tequila bottle, delivering blows to the head. The court reviewed the footage and heard that Brown pursued Diaw after the victim attempted to move away.
Brown had previously been linked to the music industry as a former partner of Rihanna. His co‑defendant, Akinlolu, is also known by the stage name Hoody Baby.
Why it matters
The suspended sentence means Brown will not serve time unless he commits another offence within the 12‑month suspension period. The ruling reflects the court’s assessment that the assault, while brief, involved a dangerous weapon and occurred in a densely populated setting, increasing the risk of serious injury. The outcome also highlights the legal consequences for public order offences in the UK, with both defendants required to pay court costs.
The case has drawn attention to the safety of nightclub patrons and the potential for violent incidents involving celebrities. It also underscores the importance of the judicial system’s role in balancing punishment with rehabilitation.
What happens next
Both Brown and Akinlolu will remain free under the terms of their suspended sentences. They must avoid further criminal activity for the next 12 months to prevent imprisonment. No further court dates or appeals have been announced.
