Rapid expansion of the Norte Fire The Norte Fire ignited on Friday in Orange County, south of Los Angeles, and quickly grew to an estimated 465 acres by that evening. By the following morning, the blaze had expanded to roughly 570 acres (about 2.3 square kilometres) and was only 5 percent contained, according to Division 3 fire officials. The fire has damaged or destroyed six residential properties in the San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano areas, as shown in video footage shared online.
Impact on firefighters and evacuation orders One firefighter was reported to have suffered heat exhaustion while combating the fire. Division 3 Fire Chief Mark Backoff indicated that additional resources were being deployed to the incident. Evacuation orders were issued for affected neighbourhoods, and residents were instructed to leave the danger zones as the fire continued to spread.
Weather conditions worsening the situation The spread of the fire has been driven by strong, gusty Santa Ana winds, which are expected to persist through Saturday. The U.S. National Weather Service issued a red‑flag warning for several California counties, citing the combination of high winds, low humidity and dry vegetation as creating critical conditions for wildfire growth.
Other wildfires across the state The Norte Fire is one of multiple incidents burning in California at the time. The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection reported that ten fires were active statewide, while a separate BBC summary referenced thirteen fires, indicating a discrepancy in the reported total.
In nearby Los Angeles County, the Bryson Fire continues to affect the affluent coastal city of Malibu. The blaze has reached about 147 acres and is roughly 52 percent contained, with more than 400 firefighters assigned to the effort. Evacuation orders have also been issued for parts of the Santa Monica Mountains.
Further south, the Henderson Fire in San Diego County, which started on Thursday, has expanded to over 3,100 acres (approximately 12.5 square kilometres) and includes portions of the Marine Corps Base. The scale of that fire underscores the broader challenge California faces as wind‑driven conditions persist.
Outlook Officials stress that the ongoing Santa Ana winds could fuel additional fire growth and complicate containment efforts. Residents in affected counties are advised to stay alert to local emergency communications and adhere to evacuation directives as conditions evolve.
