Midnight raid on Kaura Namoda
At around midnight on Friday, a group of bandits entered Kaura Namoda town in Zamfara State through a riverine route. The attackers struck the Kofar Zurmi and Old Market areas, where they engaged members of the local Joint Task Force (JTF). The assault lasted more than three hours before the assailants withdrew.
During the raid, seven members of the JTF were killed and a number of residents were taken hostage. The head of the Kaura Namoda Local Government Area, Hon. Munnir Haidara, verified the fatalities and noted that the tally of kidnapped inhabitants was still ongoing. He indicated that the figure could exceed 30.
Some of the JTF members who survived the attack are receiving treatment in hospitals.
Background
The JTF is a local security outfit that was established to help protect communities against armed attacks. The local government recruited residents into the group and supplied them with weapons. Haidara stated that the local authority had constructed earthen barriers around the town's periphery and deployed community defenders, who stayed on watch until roughly 3 a.m.while discharging cautionary gunfire to discourage intruders.
Residents reported that the bandits used an alternative route near the river to bypass these fortifications. The attackers blocked access routes and engaged the JTF in a prolonged gun battle, which prevented other security personnel from advancing.
One villager asserted that the raiders broke into the home of a religious scholar, murdered a minor male, and seized several of the man's offspring. A different inhabitant argued that the assailants exploited the absence of most local law enforcement officers, who had been moved to Kaduna State for the inauguration of President Bola Tinubu's second-term political drive.
Why it matters
The attack highlights the vulnerability of local communities in Zamfara State to armed groups. The loss of seven vigilantes and the abduction of at least 30 residents underscores the challenges faced by the Joint Task Force, which relies on locally made weapons and limited firepower. The incident also raises concerns about the security arrangements for communities during political events, as some residents suggested that the removal of security personnel to Kaduna left the town exposed.
What happens next
Hon. Haidara said the local government is still compiling data to determine the exact number of abducted residents and will release the figure by the evening. No further official statements about subsequent actions or investigations were reported in the sources.
