Attack timeline and locations During the first half of October 2026, a series of violent incidents unfolded in Niger State, Nigeria. The assaults took place in the Fanga community of Mashegu Local Government Area and in the Kigbere and Kokani villages of Borgu Local Government Area. According to reports from Daily Trust and AllAfrica, the attacks spanned from 9 to 12 October.
Casualties and material damage The raids resulted in the deaths of five farmers. In addition, 18 individuals – including women and children – were taken captive. Armed men set fire to numerous houses and commercial premises, and also destroyed a truck belonging to a local farmer. Food stores were looted, and the burning of structures left the affected villages largely deserted.
Motive and bandit demands Local sources said the perpetrators were demanding large monetary levies from residents. The bandits allegedly imposed such levies on the Fanga community on five separate occasions before the latest attack. When the community could not meet the latest demand, the attackers intensified their violence, according to statements from anonymous residents.
Displacement and humanitarian impact Following the assaults, residents of the nearby Rukukuje community in Rijau Local Government Area abandoned their homes. Some families sought refuge in the LGA headquarters at Rijau, while others crossed the border into Zamfara State. Video footage circulating on social media showed women, children and elderly people wading through a river, carrying food and personal belongings, as they attempted to reach safety. Motorcycles were also seen being pushed through the water.
Calls for government response Survivors have appealed for urgent intervention from state authorities, citing the loss of access to farmland, the suspension of schooling for children, and the broader climate of insecurity. The incidents underscore the persistent challenge of banditry in north‑central Nigeria and the resulting humanitarian displacement.
Wider security context The attacks are part of a broader pattern of bandit activity that has seen groups moving across state borders, including from Zamfara into Niger State. Local witnesses reported that the assailants entered the area through a forest in Zamfara before advancing towards the targeted villages.
The cumulative effect of the killings, abductions, property destruction and forced migrations highlights the acute security and humanitarian concerns facing communities in the region.
