Context of the address Senate President Godswill Akpabio delivered a speech during the inauguration of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council in Abuja on 14 October 2026. The ceremony took place in the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa and was attended by senior party officials and elected governors.
Call to focus on tenure Akpabio warned governors not to abandon their constituents while chasing political offices that are not currently open. He reminded them that the constitution permits a maximum of two consecutive terms, or eight years, for a governor. He urged them to finish their allotted time before looking for other positions.
Reference to Anambra governor The former governor of Akwa Ibom State cited the example of Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo, who had said that attempting to repair an untorn cloth could damage it. Akpabio used the analogy to suggest that governors should not try to force a change that is not needed or possible.
Personal experience Having governed Akwa Ibom from 2007 to 2015, Akpabio said that his long‑term success was built on a commitment to the people. He said that he had won repeatedly because he stood with his constituents and that governors should do the same.
Senate rule change Earlier this year, the Senate amended its rules to restrict the election of the Senate President and Deputy Senate President to members who have served at least eight years in the chamber. The amendment was aimed at ensuring that only experienced senators could occupy the top leadership posts.
Unconfirmed reports There are unconfirmed reports that a governor whose term will still be running when the 11th Senate convenes is eyeing the Senate President’s seat. The reports say he intends to resign and contest a Senate seat, but under the new rule he would not qualify because he has been out of the National Assembly for eight years.
Conclusion Akpabio’s message was aimed at encouraging governors to prioritise service over ambition. He also urged President Bola Tinubu to heed the advice of Governor Soludo and to support governors who remain committed to their people.
